The best varieties of white cabbage

One of the favorite crops of gardeners is white cabbage, the varieties of which are so diverse that choosing them can become a serious problem even for an experienced gardener.

Before choosing a variety, you should decide on its purpose: whether it will be eaten immediately or subject to long-term storage. Let’s look at several of the best varieties of cabbage that have earned recognition from gardeners.

EARLY VARIETIES OF CABBAGE

Early varieties of white cabbage usually do not have high yields; the heads of cabbage grow small in size with a somewhat loose consistency. It is better to eat them fresh.

Here are the best early cabbage varieties and hybrids:

  • Zarya is an early ripening variety. As a rule, harvesting takes place within 45 days from the time of planting of seedlings. The weight of medium-dense fruits can reach one and a half kilograms;
  • Dumas is another early ripening variety, yields within 60 days from planting;
  • June – the harvest is harvested approximately two months after cabbage seedlings are planted in the ground, the heads of cabbage are round in shape and weigh up to two and a half kilograms;
  • Malachite – ripens in 50-60 days and is distinguished by its juiciness and excellent taste, which is ideal for salad;
  • Cossack – collection can be carried out approximately 50 days from the moment the seedlings are transplanted into the garden.

MEDIUM CABBAGE VARIETIES

Medium varieties of white cabbage can be divided into mid-season, mid-early and mid-late. The varieties produce a rich harvest, but take longer to ripen. It is recommended to use this cabbage for processing, for example, canning or pickling. The most popular medium varieties include:

  • Dobrovodskaya – harvesting usually takes place approximately 120 days after planting. The heads of cabbage are quite large – up to six kilograms, and have a juicy, excellent taste;
  • Gift – round and relatively large heads of cabbage ripen in an average of 115 days. This variety is excellent for fermentation and consumption in its raw form;
  • Slava 1305 is a universal variety that ripens in 85 days. It is worth noting that this particular variety is considered the most productive;
  • Midor – cabbage, excellent for processing, ripens on average in 100-115 days, but, as a rule, cannot be stored for long;
  • Menza is a variety that is excellent for long-term storage and ripens in about 100 days. Menza cabbage has an excellent taste both fresh and pickled.

LATE VARIETIES OF CABBAGE

In white cabbage, late-ripening varieties are among the most productive, different, and have excellent taste. They are consumed fresh and processed. If cabbage is stored correctly, it will not lose its quality until the next season. The best cabbage varieties in this segment are the following:

  • Geneva – heads of cabbage ripen in approximately 140 days and can be perfectly stored until the next batch of the harvest ripens;
  • Amager – collection begins on the 120th day from the moment of planting, the heads of cabbage have a round, slightly flattened shape and excellent taste, which becomes even better in winter;
  • Crumont – medium-sized heads of cabbage ripen at about 130 days and are ideal for fresh consumption;
  • Turkiz – dense heads of this cabbage almost never crack and ripen approximately three months after planting.

Regardless of the ripening period, we still recommend choosing zoned varieties, since each region has different conditions, and therefore certain varieties may be less productive in one area than in another. By choosing the right cabbage variety, you will provide yourself with an excellent harvest for the long winter.
